Aikido is unique among Japanese martial arts. As suggested by its name: ai – harmony, ki – spirit, do – the Way, it never resists or clashes but brings the opponent under complete control by blending with the oncoming force. The practice of Aikido develops balance, strength, flexibility and relaxed movement. As well as being an effective martial art, aikido is challenging, fun to practice and healthful exercise for mind and body. For the martial artist, student of yoga, dancer, and athlete or for anyone interested in dramatically expanding and changing the way they move, think, and react; Aikido offers a uniquely different and highly beneficial approach to exercise and practice. Aikido training places an emphasis on timing and "blending" … great size or strength is not required. Diligent practice over time is the key.
We have four class-days per week. You may begin your study anytime. Just sign up and start training. Wear loose fitting gym clothes or a gi if you have one. Membership entitles you to attend all weekly classes. New students train with both beginning and advanced students during class. The essence of Aikido is cooperation and respect. This philosophy is expressed through Aikido’s unique use of throws and locks. Classes are not competitive. We bring each student along according to ability and level of conditioning. We make a special effort to give all students a strong foundation in the basics. If you were studying rock climbing, you’d want to be trained by an advanced climber. This same principle holds true for Aikido. Training with our advanced students and black belts is safer for you and you’ll learn what you need to know to train safely and enjoyably for years to come.
We also offer several eight-week "beginners’ courses" each year. If the timing is right, you may choose to use a beginner’s course to start your training. If you start class "off-cycle" by attending regular classes, you can always attend a beginners’ course later on. Experienced students are encouraged to attend beginners’ classes to help new students and to refine their own understanding of Aikido fundamentals.
We currently have four black-belt instructors led by Elizabeth Dinowitz, 6th dan, Shidoin, head instructor and co-founder of Monadnock Aikikai. Liz (pictured at left) has been practicing Aikido for over 30 years. She started her practice at New York Aikikai under the instruction of Yoshimitsu Yamada Sensei.
The standard fee for membership is $50 per month plus a onetime $25 registration fee. Membership entitles you to take any and all classes, four days per week. Discounts are available for students, couples and families. To arrange a visit, to attend a free class or for more info, just give a call.
